Idrija is the city with the longest mining tradition in Slovenia. The rich legacy of the mercury mine, which is located on the UNESCO World Heritage List on account of its uniqueness, offers plenty of possibilities for exploration. Mining brought the lace to the city, which, thanks to the many lace-makers and other lace lovers, which was nurtured and developed over time.

Welcome to Idrija! We will take you through the centuries-old mining heritage.

FOR FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS

UNESCO Idrija, where lace intertwines with the history of mercury mining – come with the family to the Idrija Lace Festival on Sunday, June 17, 2018
 

Programme:

 9.30 - 11.00 Visit to the town centre and the miner’s house

Get to know the oldest Slovenian mining town by walking around the town centre. You will see the main town sights, markets and famous buildings, get to know interesting stories, you will take a stroll to the miner’s house…
 

11.00 - 14.00 Together with the mining guide, you will search for the “Perkmandlc's” treasure in the Antony's shaft-tourist mine, or follow the procession of lace-makers with the Idrija Miners Wind Orchestra (Godbeno društvo rudarjev Idrija), and the national lace-making competition.
 

14.00 - 16.00 Leisure time for lunch and individual tours or participation at workshops... You can even make your own mega lace!

 

16.00 - 18.30 A walk to the park in Mejca, a visit to Scopoli's Memorial Garden and mining locomotives. You will continue the underground mine experience in the renovated Hg Smelting Plant, which displays the history of Idrija smelting and the extreme importance of mercury, which marked the development of Idrija and allowed human civilization to prosper.

In the first part of the exhibition, with the help of experiments, animations, video films and mercury-based devices, you will learn and experience the importance of this unique liquid metal that has transformed the world and its versatility in science, technology, industry, medicine, culture and everyday life from prehistoric times to the present.

In the second part of the tour, where the development of smelting furnaces over the centuries is shown, you will experience the history and importance of Idrija smelting. After viewing the exhibition, you will use the lift to the highest level of the preserved ore separation plant - the final station of the freight cableway, from where a beautiful view of the town unfurls.

UNESCO Idrija, the luxury of lace and mercury mining heritage

Programme:

9.00 - 10.30 Tour Antony's Shaft-tourist mine

Visit the tourist mine – Antony’s shaft, where there are more than 1200 meters of underground mine tunnels, right next to the oldest preserved entrance to the mine dating from 1500. After a 300 meter long mine tunnel, miners travelled to the pit for almost half a millennium and returned tired from a hard day's toil. Today, you might run into “Perkmandlc” there.

11.30 - 13.30 Visiting the Kamšt, Scopoli’s Memorial Garden, mining locomotives and Hg Smelting Plant

Visit Kamšt, the water pump for pumping pit water from the time, dating from the extraordinary rise of the mine at the end of the 18th century. Then visit mining locomotives,  Scopoli’s Memorial Garden, and enjoy the interactive exhibition at the refurbished Hg Smelting Plant.

You will continue the underground mine experience in the renovated Hg Smeltery, which shows the history of Idrija smelting and the extreme importance of mercury, which marked the development of Idrija and allowed human civilization to prosper.

13.30 - 15.00 Lunch and individual tours, a walk between stalls at the fair of cottage industry and handicraft products, bobbin lace-making equipment and culinary specialties.
 

15.00 - 17.30 Local guidance around the town centre

A local guide will be waiting for you outside the town hall, and under his guidance, you will then go for a walk around the town centre and learn about the origin and development of the oldest mining town in Slovenia. You will visit a mining house from the end of the 18th century, which to this day has preserved the main features of the once typical Idrija architecture and mining living culture. During the tour of the main town sights, markets, and famous buildings, you will be given time to visit and explore the lace exhibitions that will open their doors for the Idrija Lace Festival. You will complete your tour in an indoor farm market where you can sample and buy homemade products.
 

 

FOR GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS

UNESCO Idrija - a wonderful world of lace, mercury mining and untouched nature

Programme:

9.00 - 09.30 Wild lake - Divje jezero

Visit the Wild Lake, a museum in nature. The Wild Lake and its surroundings boast an exceptional wealth of flora and fauna, such as the Carniolan Cove and the human fish. It is located in the Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park, which comprises a large part of the Idrijca river basin, from its source to the town of Idrija. Next to the Wild lake, there is also the Jezernica, the shortest riverine in Slovenia, which after 55 meters flows into the Idrijca. The lake lies 2 km south of Idrija.
 

9.30 - 10.30 Walk along the Rake trail

You will take a walk along Rake, the natural science trail, to Kamšt (outdoor tour), the water pump for pumping pit water, dating from the extraordinary rise of the mine at the end of the 18th century. You will also see the mining locomotives and the Scopoli's Memorial Garden.
 

10.30 - 11.00 Coffee break and visit to the indoor farm market, where you can taste and buy homemade produces and products.


11.00 - 14.00 Local guidance through the town centre (for groups only)

Under the guidance of a local guide, you will then go for a walk along the town centre and get to know the story of the origin and development of the oldest Slovenian mining town. You will also visit the mining house. During the tour of the main town sights, markets and famous buildings, you will be allowed the time to visit and explore the lace exhibitions, which will open their doors for the Idrija Lace Festival.
 

 14.00 - 15.30 Lunchtime

 15.30 - 17.00 Visit to Anthony’s Shaft or the Idrija Municipal Museum

Visit Anthony's shaft or Gewerkenegg Castle. The first one offers an unforgettable experience of visiting the second largest mercury mine in the world. In the latter, the rich technical and cultural heritage of Idrija is shown.
